Formal review of Eglish 100 take two

Coming into English 100, I was not sure what to expect. I was very nervous, and then you mentioned the word BLOG, that through me for a loop. Not knowing anything about computers let alone a blog I thought I was doomed from the beginning. I have never had to write an essay before in my life that I could remember, so after hearing about all this stuff on the first day, I really wasnt going to come back for the next class. After taking English 100 and with a lot of patience and help, I believe that I am capable of writting some what of a essay on different subjects and people.
Over the last 3 months taking the class has helped me to understand the different parts that make up an essay, such as the introduction, body, conclusion and probably the most important part, the thesis.
After I understood the blog I started enjoying using it. It made it easier for me to put my thought and words down on paper, which I have had a very hard time doing ever.I could also go back at anytime and read over what I wrote and make any changes or corrections that I needed to make. I do believe that being modernized and introduced to the blog has made it a lot easier for me to write.
To me a journal and a blog are simuliar, except with a blog you dont have to deal with the mess of papers and pens. And using the blog I get practice typing, something that I have not had to do much in the past.
I would like to see less writing assignments in English 104, it was hard for me to concentrate on writing an essay, when I had to go back and deal with different reading and writting assignments. I have a hard time doing two things at once, I believe that it might have to do with my old age. Also, not so many Task papers, I will hope and pray that their will only be 3 in English 104, or I can see my brain overloading and exploding.

Self evaluation for Task Four

1.What is the thesis for my paper? The different knowledge and power that you can gain through reading and writing.
2. List the main points you make in your paper? The main point that I tried to make in this essay, was the importance of learning how to read and write. Without having that capability you will have a very hard time succeeding in anything you try to accomplish in your life these days. The knowledge that you can get from reading and writing is endless.
3. The most helpful advice I received from my peer review? That my rough draft was messed up, basically I had everything backwards. I was concentrating to much on Fredrick Douglass's life and missing the whole subject of Task Four. So the night before Task Four was due I changed everything around and switched to concentrating on Eudora Welty's essay.
4.What was the most helful info. I received in class for this paper? That it was going to be very simaliar to Task Three in a lot of ways.
5.How many drafts? 3 drafts, 2 using Douglass and then the final using Welty. I write everything down on paper first, then I go over it and put it on the computer.I pre-write everything first in outline form before I put it on the computer. It usually takes me a couple of days to write down everything, then a couple of hours to put it on the computer.
6. Again I had problems with the conclusion, maybe with a little more time I could of written a better ending.
7.I was comfortable with the essay, had a lot of rushing around since I change everything at the last moment.

Questons for Refection and Writing......Fredrick Douglass

Answer to question 2..
I think my history of education is just the opposite of Fredrick Douglass's. Douglass always had people trying to stop him from learning how to read. He had to teach himself how to read with very little material, without people knowing. His master did not want him to learn how to read or learn any type of education. Because to his master knowledge was power and he did not want any of the slaves to have power.
On the other hand, I was tought how to read at a young age by several people at school. In order to get any place in the world today you have to know how to read. The one simularity between Douglass and myself is, Douglass had Mrs. Auld's teaching him how to read and his alphabet at a young age. When I had my mother teaching me and making me read for her every night after dinner or before bed. Nobody forced Douglass to learn how to read, he did it on his own. Where in some cases when I was young I had to be forced to read, I did not like to read in my younger days.

Experiences with reading and writing

Growing up reading was not my favorite thing to do. As a matter of fact, I believe I only read three books the whole time that I was in school, reading ws very boring to me.The stories that were in the books seemed to go on and on, I would always lose interest real quick. As I turned older, I started to read more often. Short stories are my favorite. One of my favorite set of books are Chicken Soup for the Soul.( And of course if you ask me in front of people I will deny it.) I also like reading books about famous murderers and criminals. At the present time I am reading a book called American Murder, Criminals, Crime and the Media. I is written by Mike Mayo. Its about America's most infamous psychopaths, assassins, criminals and villians. It consists of about 300 short stories.
Writing was something I avoided to. The essays that I have done in English 100 are probably the most that I have wrote in 25 years. It is hard for me to put my thoughts done on paper, but after taking English 100, it made it a lot easier for me to do. Taking this course i was worried, English was probably one of my worst subjects in high school. I figured that I was going to have a hard time taking English in college, but to my surprise it has been a good experience. I was not sure that after 25 years of being out of school, that I was going to remember anything. A lot of stuff has changed in those 25 years. I never had to write an essay or even any kind of a story that I remember back in school. We didnt have computers either, so when you mentioned the word blog, I was lost in space.I have learned a lot and enjoyed the past 3 months.

Self evaluation for Task Three

What is my thesis? Under Botstein's proposed system, a 16 year old  would fail in society today. It is essential that the system stays the way it is, and students graduate at eighteen.  This would allow them  to continue maturing and learning. At this pointthe economy could possibly be more prepared to provide them with jobs.
Main points? That 16 year olds are still immature, their brains are still growing and lacking knowledge. They should stay in school the full 4 years of high school. This might give them the knowledge and training they need to go out into the work force and get a good paying job.
Most helpful advice from peer evaluation? That I need a title for my essay, and that my cites was wrong.
Most helpful information I received in  class? I would say that it had to do wiyh learning how to summerize the essay into my own words. That was kinda of a starting point for me, on writing the essay.
I wrote two drafts of this paper, took down lots of notes, 5 minute outline in workshop, and put i all together as a rough draft.
I am still having problems with run on sentences and fragments. But my biggest problem seems to be writing the conclusion.
The thing that pleases me the most is how much I have learned to put my words and meanings down on a piece of paper. Before I started English 100, I was a lost puppy with writing down thing. and of course getting a good grade, thats very pleasing to me.

Task Three

Well I think that I am going to use the essay '' Let Teen-Agers Try Adulthood '' by Leon Botstein.
My focus will be on, how I disagree with Botstein when he says, that young people graduate at the age of 16, rather than 18. And that they should enter the work force next to adults.

Analysis

I have been fortunate to never see a school system like Kozol describes in this story. I agree with Kozol, I do believe that the children in a savage environment that he writes about are very much innocent. They have done nothing wrong, but they are the ones that end up paying for it.

'Savage Inequalities; Children in American's Schools

     - Do you think our education system is effective, or do you think changes need to be made?
My answer to this question is, I think that education can be effective if it is taught right, and by a teacher who is educated in the subject that they are trying to teach. By this I mean there are certain subject that need to be stressed upon. Those subjects should be taught at a level that everyone tha is being educated in that subject can understands it. There are a lot of students that pick things up real quick, and on the other hand , there are alot of students that have a difficult time at everything  that they try to learn or do. These are the students that fall behind, or do poorly in the class. Eventually these student tend to get frustrated and give up, either they drop out of the class or in some cases quit school altogether. Eduction is only effective if all the student can learn from it. I also feel that education is more effective when it is taught  in a stable environment. Not in a classroom where student have to worry about bomb threats, peer pressure, drugs and violence. These can only have a negitive affect on the students ability to learn, or this will sway them not to attend school at all.
I think that changes should be made in some of the subjects that are being taught. Back when I was in high school I was taught a lot of things that I never used after graduation, such as American History, World History and math. Some of these subjects are manditory and I dont think that a student should have to waste their time and money learning them.

''Let Teen-Agers Try Adulthood''

     2) What problems with U.S. high schools does Botstein assume the audience will understand and agree with? Do you think he is right in his assumptions?  That the American high school is obsolete and should be abolished. Team sports of high school dominate more than students culture. Giving the poor quality of recruitment and training for high school teachers, it is no wonder that the curriculum and enterprise of learning holds so little sway over young people. The primary reason high school doesnt work anymore, if it ever did, is that young people mature substantially earlier in the late 20th century than they did when high school was invented.
I disagree with his comment, that American high school is obsolete and should be abolished. High school gets the students prepared for college, and the future. You have to learn how to crawl, before you can walk.
Team sports dominate more than student culture is true, and they probably always will. In some school districts, its the sports that keep the schools alive. If you take away the sports, then you might have to close the school. About poor quality of recruitment and training for high school teachers. I disagree with that comment, back in the early eighties when I went to high school, the teachers were very educated in the subject or subjects they taught. And now I am attending college and I feel the same way, that the teachers are very knowledgeable in the class that they teach.
The comment, that high school doesnt work anymore, because young people mature substantially earlier in the 20th century than they did when high school was invented is just wrong in my opinion. I believe that it is just the opposite from what Bolstein says. The young people are more immature and spoiled, they rely on their parent or someone else to take care of them or their issues. They have no concept of work or what it means to be responsible.

Where College Fails Us

What have been your experiences of college?
I have only been going to college for about 7 weeks now. In my opinion it seems that about 40 percent of the kids here, have come to study and get an education to better their future. While the other 60 percent are going to college for the partys and " the college life ". Between classes I go to the library to do my work, and just like clock work, I hear the kids bragging about how much they drank or got stone the night before. Or their big plans for the weekend, which involves partying and getting stupid. It also seems like the kids spend more time on Facebook talking about each other, than doing their work. or studying.
Why are you in college?
I always wanted to go to college after I left the military, but I could not afford it. Then I got married and started a family, so my first priority was to support my family, and that did not include going to college. Now my children are grown up and now I can do what I have been putting off for the last two decades. Also you need some type of college degree in order to get chosen for certain kind of jobs. Hopefully with my experience and college education I wont have a hard time landing a job in the field I choose.
Do you think college is worth the time, effort and expense?
I am about 50/50 on that answer, I worked with people at Ford Motor Co. that had a four year degree and the had to work on the assembly line right next to someone that never graduated from high school. It just depends on the rate of pay and the benefits that the receive, it doesnt matter about your education you have. on the other hand some jobs insist that you have some type of college degree in order to work there. Right now from what I have experienced in life and seen in the society, I would say that you are better off spending the time, effort and money to go to college and get a degree.

self evaluation for Task Two

What is the thesis for your paper?  My mother would like to share some of her education experiences that she received while growing up from the schools she attended, education stressed by nuns, and taught by teachers. She would also like to share her opinions on how she believes schools and education have changed over the years.
List the main points you make in your paper? That nuns and teachers stressed education on the students. That my mother strived to be the best that she could be throughout school. That my mothers favorite subject in school was English, and that she loved to read books, so she could find out what was going on in the world at that time. How school has changed through modern technology...computers, calculators, and televisions. That schools are lacking discipline.
What was the most helpful advice that you received from your peer review? That I need to indent when I am starting a new paragragh. Still having problems with fragment sentences.
What was the most helpful info. you received in the class for your paper? The rule about 's, s, s'
How many drafts? 3 drafts. When did you write them? Last week including the past weekend. I sent my mother questions thru email, she sent me the answers, then I formed an outline from the example I received in Writer's Workshop. And I wrote a lot of notes at several sittings.
What would you do differently with this paper to make it more effectively. I was not comfortable with the thesis, or the conclusion. The body to me seemed very good, I gave a lot of info.
What are you most pleased with about this paper? That I could put all my questions and answers together and write an essay, again I have never done this type of work before. We never did this type of work back in school.

How interview process went for Task Two

What questions still remain?
a. No questions remain for me right now, but I have called my mother 7 times in the last 3 days to get answers to questions.
How did it go?
a. It went good, my mother was very excited to hear from me, also more than happy to participate in the interview.
Where did you conduct it?
a. Well it started on the phone, then it moved to a question and answering session using Email, and then it went back to the phone.
What did you learn?
a.I learned a lot about my mother and her schools and her education. For some reason she never talked to me about it before.
How do you intend to transition to the writing process?
a. Very slowly, I have written 3 different intoductions and changed the thesis twice. I believe it will be a long weekend of writing.
What concerns do you have?
a. My biggest concern is fragment sentences, that seems to be my biggest problem in writing write now.
How do you expect to overcome them?
a. Right now I keep rereading every sentence I write, and hopefully that is enough. If not, you will mark ALL over my rough draft and I will go from there..

Becoming Educated.....A writers response?

  1. Education means to me? Having knowledge in certain subjects, being able to discuss a  subjects  in detail, and able to answer questions about that subject that people ask you. Having an education means that you are one step closer to getting that job you are trying for. Knowledge to get a certain job done or being able to train or lead people to get the job done. You have to have an education today in order to get anywhere in life or to advance in a job field. Having an education means that you are able to see when something is going wrong, and being able to fix problems when they do go wrong. Knowledge and education to me means power, being able to make that decision or being able to change the outcome. Without education people would be lost, they would be going in circles wondering where they are at. Education means security, making a good safe choice with what you know. Being educated in a certain field gives you the ability to understand people or their ways, being able to relate to their ways or customs. Education means possible saving a life or what it would take to save that life. Having an education makes you a leader and not a follower, someone that people can rely on or relate to. Having an education can also be a bad thing,  I have seen a lot of educated idiots in my days. These individuals think  they know everything about everything,or everyone but they just make a situation bad or worse than it was. A good example could be some of the politicians in office today. Education is a good thing if it is used in a good way.

Questions for Task Two

     1) Dates that you attended school, from grade school to high school?
     2) Average amount of people in your grade?
     3) Education history, schools attended and describe them?
     4) What were some of your memerable experiences from school?
     5) Was school easy or hard? and why?
     6) What was your favorite subject or subjects? and why?
     7) How has your views of education been modified since you graduated?
     8) How has your education connect to your life now? and why?
     9) Do you think school and education has changed since you were there? and how or why?
    10) Did you attend college? if so, what did you major in? why?
    11) Didnt attend college? why not?

I would start out getting a view of  her school and the surroundings. Then find out about her education, favorite subjects. Then go into her education experience, and how it affected her life then and now. And how does she think education has changed over the years since she has graduated, good or bad. Why didnt she attend college? I think by doing this and asking these question I should be able to get enough to write a essay about my mothers education experiences.

Casa...Reflection and writing

          Answer to question 3.
Cuento's is a spanish word meaning literally '' story '' or  '' tale ''. Cuento's may specifically refer to folk tales, a catagory of folklore that includes stories passed down thru oral tradition. The word cuento may also be used as a verb to say ''tell'' as if you are telling a story. A couple of examples that come to mind are from my younger days. The one that sticks out would be Robin Hood the Prince of Thieves. Another example would be the stories about the Three Musketeers, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. Another example would be Jack and the Bean Stalk. One cautionary tale that was always told to me when I was young by my parent. Was if you played with fire you were going to pee the bed. Growing up my family used to go camping a lot, we always sat arond the fire at night , and my mother would always warn us.

Sister Flowers...writing topics

            6. I chose number six to answer. Tell the story of a memorable childhood experience. Well I dont remember to much from my childhood since its been so long ago. I do remember the first time my dad took me deer hunting in Pennslyvania. My mother is from PA. and my father is from N.Y, about 5 miles over the border of PA. During my childhood we would go back and forth from Ohio to PA. quite often to visit my grandparents. My dad growing up on a farm was a big deer hunter, so he would go back to PA. for deer season every year. Being the youngest out of 4 brothers, at that time I was the only one interested in deer hunting. So my father made plans for me to go hunting with him, he took me to the store bought me the right clothes and got me all ready for the big day. The season opened up on a monday, so I would miss some school. That was always a bad thing because I loved going to school, especially english class. The day before season opener my father and I went scouting in the woods where we were going to hunt. We seen a lot of deer tracks and signs of deer, but one place stood out. I told my dad that I thought that this was a good place. So we found a tree which I could climb up and get a better view of my surroundings. It was a good tree to be in, especially on opening day with a lot of hunters in the woods. Morning came and I was tired, was to excited to sleep the night before. We packed up are stuff and started walking down the road which led us to the woods where I was going to hunt. My father dropped me off close to where I was going to climbup in the tree. It was really dark out still and i was a little bit uneasy about walking in the dark woods by myself, but I did it. I found the tree thet I was looking for, and hurried and climbed into it.Daylight came and I couldnt keep my eyes open, I kept knodding off. And then I heard a noise, which sounded like someone walking thru the woods. When all of the sudden 4 doe ( a doe is a female deer), came running thru the woods right under the tree that I was in. I was in a state of shock, I never had deer come that close to me before. Well they were all doe, and I was hunting for a buck ( a buck is a male deer with antlers) so I watched them go up and over a hill off to my left. Then out of no where the 4 doe appeared again running down the hill in front of me. I watched them for a second, and then I found out why they were running away. The doe were being chased by a buck. This was it, my chance, I waited until the buck made his way in front of me. I picked up me rifle and aimed it at the deer, at this time the deer was about 75 yards away, running. I had to get him to stop, so I yelled '' STOP ''. Sure enough that deer stopped in his tracks. I shot, hitting the deer in the right side. But it wasnt a good shot, the deer went down but got right up and started running. I believe the words " oh shit " came out of my mouth or atleast I was thinking about saying them. I levered another round into the barrel of my 30-30, and took aim and shot again. This time the shot hit its mark, the deer went down and stayed down. I climbed out of the tree and slowly walked down the hill, keeping my rifle pointed at the deer the entire time.I reached the deer and it was still alive, kicking and tearing up the ground. And I believe those words came out of my mouth again. What do I do now? I dont want him to suffer anymore, so I shot him again. Finally after what seemed to be minutes, the deer died. Now what do I do? I reached in my pocket and took out the rope my dad gave me, I tied it around the deers neck and tried pulling the deer up the hill. It wasnt moving, so I told myself that I have to pull this deer up this hill, I gave it everything inside of me. And as my luck was going, the rope broke. Now what do I do? So I buried the deer in some leaves, and went and got my dad , and we pulled the deer out of the woods. Went into town checked the deer in, dropped it of to get processed. I went back to my grandma's house and went to sleep on the couch and sleep the day away.

Self Evaluation

Self-Evaluation
What is the thesis for your paper?
List the main points you make in your paper.
What was the most helpful advice you received from your peer evaluation?
What was the most helpful information you received in class for your paper?
How many drafts of this paper do you think you wrote and how/when did you write them? For example, did you compose at the keyboard, did you write lots of notes to yourself, did you pre-write or outline, did you write in small chunks of time or sit down and produce an entire draft at one sitting?
What would you do differently with this paper to make it more effectively, or what did you try to do that you just don’t think you got a good handle on?
What are most pleased with about this paper?

1. It was then when I thought to myself, I might be in the wrong business, That only lasted a minute.
2. Main points to me were, that offenders where getting tought trades that I would like to receive. But I would have to pay a lot of money for the schooling. The offenders gt all the schooling for free. I think that is very unfair. Also I wanted to get the point across that tax payers pay the bill for these offenders to get educated.
3. Nothing really.
4. How to choose a thesis, and use that thesis to base your essay on. Also learned how to formate the essay, intro, body and ect.
5. I had 4 drafts, I would write bits and peices as they came to me, and put them all together and go from there.
6. Wanted to point out more cases were the offenders were getting different education tought to them. but I think this would of made the essay to long.
7. That I wrote it, I have never wrote an essay before in my life. Maybe I should interview myself for Task 2.

           3. Ask questions about the books they had to read back then, what their dictionary consisted of and basically, what english class was like 50 years ago.
4.Being able to find the right font size for my paper.

'' On Becoming a Chicano''

     1) I am American. There are alot of  Spanish speaking people in the U.S. today. I think that speaking Spanish would be an advantage for me for at work and everyday life.
When I was in the military, I spent two years in Asia ( Korea ). Here it was very hard to travel or do anything outside of the post, because of the language barrier that was there. Most of the older generation do not speak any English. To make things a little easier for me, I tried to learn the language. By the time I left there, I could speak a little Korean, enough to get me around.

Ideas for Task One

             1)
How being the youngest brother out of four, was not fun.
I do not anticipate any problems writing about this topic, is is easy for alot of people to relay to. I do not have any questions at this time.
             2)
Being in prison has its benefits, at taxpayers cost.
I anticipate a problem or two with being to long and giving to much information. It seems like it is a topic that will get alot of peoples attention, and information that they know nothing about.

''How It Feels to Be Colored Me''

I would best compare myself to a robot. I am always on the go, needing little maintenance to keep me running. Being able to show little or no emotions to certain situations. I am able to let things bounce off of me like a rubber ball, and nothing inside of me would be damaged.
In the job field that I am currently in, I must be able to get over things real quick, without showing any emotions, for they will be taken as a sign of weakness and taken advantage of.
It seems like Hurston puts masks on to pretend that she is someone else. She also feels like she is being discriminated against too, but she lets those things bounce off of her, and does not get mad.

'' Rite of Passage''

I remember my grandfather on my mothers side the most. He was a tall man with broad shoulders and cotton white hair. He seemed to be a gaint to me. Visiting my grandparents was always fun because my grandfather would give us boys a roll of quarters, and take us to the store so we could buy candy and play video games. My grandfather loved going to the horse tracks and betting on horses. If you asked him about a certain horse he was always be able to give you the background about the horse, and tell if the horse was worth  a placing a bet on.
I also remember that my grandmother would not ride in a car that he was driving. Grandmother would say that he had a lead foot and that he was going to kill himself one day. I am sure that this is the reason why my parents would not let us ride alone with him. .

My first blog???

My name is Gregory Vanderhoof, and I go by Greg. I am attending Missouri Western State University in search of a degree in Criminal Justice. I have always wanted to pursue a career in Law Enforcement and one of my goals is to attend the Police Academy in the near future. I am also interested in studying the reasons why people commit crimes and what led them to committing these crimes and what it would take to stop people from committing crimes.
I was born in the State of Ohio, and raised in a little town called Sheffield Lake, which is located on Lake Erie. I attended grade school at St.Thomas, and graduated high school from Lorain Catholic. I enlisted in the U.S Army, and there I spent 6 years. I left the military and went to work for Ford Motor Company for the next 16 years. I left Ford in 2008, and from there I went to work for the Department of Corrections as a Corrections Officer, and here is where I got to deal close up with the criminal society. I left the Department of Corrections, and now I work for a Security Company, and here I am  employed as a Armed Private Security Officer.
I am intersted in reading books about serial killers and the different crimes and murders that have taken place over the past years. I am not a big fan in writing as you can tell. I also like watching shows on tv like Criminal Minds, 48 hours, C.S.I. and such shows like that.
